Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Michigan State Police have identified the man shot and killed by officers on US-127 Sunday as 27-year-old Cameron Joel Cothern of Lansing.
Authorities say Cothern was walking near Barnes Road carrying multiple knives when deputies were called around 4 p.m. Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth said officers attempted to calm him down for 13 minutes, repeatedly asking him to drop the weapons.
A taser was used but had no effect. The sheriff said Cothern, who was not handcuffed, advanced toward the deputies with knives in hand before the shooting occurred.
The incident is under investigation by Michigan State Police, who say Cothern may have ties to Indiana.
