Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson Fire Department has a new tool to assist in emergencies — a high-tech drone, donated by Industrial Steel Treating. The drone will aid in firefighting, investigations, and search-and-rescue missions.

JFD Captain Shane Green says the drone’s thermal camera can help find missing people and even detect victims underwater.

Captain Green said, “It’s just another tool that helps us do our jobs. In large fires or rescues, it gives us a full view of the situation in minutes.”

The donation, inspired by last year’s massive industrial fire on North Street, also included training for three firefighters to become licensed drone pilots.

Tim Levy of Industrial Steel Treating says they wanted to support local firefighters and improve emergency response.

JFD says the drone will only be used for emergencies, ensuring residents’ privacy. While it hasn’t been deployed yet, firefighters are ready to launch it when needed.
