Jackson, Mich. — Much of lower Michigan is seeing lots of sunshine and temperatures around 80°F this week. The warm weather will have people wanting to light up their grills and dust off their fire pits to make a few s’mores, but the National Weather Service (NWS) and DNR agree this could lead to trouble.

There is a fire watch in effect for much of mid-Michigan, including Jackson County, Noon through 8:00 p.m. today, citing the recent weather for making the perfect condition for wildfires.

The NWS says that warm, dry air and gusty winds will result in a higher chance of fires quickly spreading out of control. They advise being careful with any activities that could potentially lead to a wildfire. Camping, outdoor grills, smoking materials, chain saws, and all terrain vehicles all have the potential to throw a spark and ignite a dangerous and destructive fire.
