The topic of “Single Hauler Trash Service” is a hot-button issue in Jackson and it has come up recently within the Jackson City Council. Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney was asked his thoughts on the issue recently on WKHM’s AM Jackson with Greg O’Connor.
“I think we should look at what’s best for the entire community” Mahoney replied, “I think we have to look at how we can reduce, how can we reduce the amount of trash hauling trucks on our street. You shouldn’t have to live on a residential street (where) I may have one service, my neighbor may have a different service, the people across from them have they have a different service and the people next door to them they have a different service”.
When asked how the current system wasn’t working, Mahoney said “We’re all paying to much, we’ve got increased traffic on our streets because of it, and we also have a lot of illegal dumping happening in our community”. Mahoney feels that as the Mayor, working with the City Council and the City Manager, it is their responsibility to look at what may be a more affordable and efficient solution to the City’s current trash-hauling policy.
Mahoney said he understands that residents may view a Single Hauler system as “the city just wants to take over trash. That’s not the case” he explained, “The city just wants to give this contract to one hauler, one company, that’s not the case. I think there’s several different options that we can look at and evaluate to see what fits best”.
The potential cost savings the City would see in a Single Trash Hauler could have an impact on existing businesses, were one hauler to receive the city contract. “I’d would hate to put people out of business” said Mayor Mahoney.
