The Western High School soccer team capped a perfect regular season last night with their 16th victory of the season, defeating Detroit Country Day 1-3. Coach Scott Watterson reflected on the season prior to the season finale, and talked about how perfection can be challenging, “The biggest challenge is just keeping the guys focused (the fact) we’re human and we can make mistakes and we have to minimize that.” Watterson said of the Panther’s soccer team.
In what may be foreshadowing, Waterson made comments early in the season about the pressure the kid’s face, and that may still apply heading into the post-season “We have to come out every night a play like it’s our last game. The psychology of sport is so interesting.” Waterson explained, “There are times that we, whether it be for a portion of a game or in a training session that we look just really flat. Fortunately, we have guys that, when those things are addressed, and they respond well.”
The Panthers outscored their opposition by a remarkable 85-7 and recorded 10 shutouts while reeling off 16 straight wins.
The Western Panthers Soccer team heads into districts and will host Hastings at home on Thursday night, October 14th, 2022 at 6 pm.
