County Commission Working On Plan To Repair Major Roads In Leoni Township

steve-shotwell-new-2022

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – The Jackson County Commission is currently working on a plan that would repair some major roads in Leoni Township using money earned off of taxed marijuana sales. The project would look at repairing roads such as Flansburg, Sutton, and South Street. Some money from the marijuana tax has already been allocated to law enforcement. Vice Chairman Corey Kennedy worked with Leoni Township to find $200,000 in funds to go towards the project.  Primary roads are usually fixed using Act 51 funds, also known as gas tax.

The plan the county commission is working on would stretch the funds raised by using the technique of skip paving, which is the process they used in repairs on South Street. The Road Department would use all season asphalt, which would prevent patches from breaking down after a freeze and thaw.  The plan would then be to reuse that material to build the foundation of a permanent road in 5-8 years.
