The Michigan Supreme Court has denied Jackson Public Schools’ appeal in a retaliation case where a lower court ruled that a former district art teacher was the victim of retaliation after reporting an assault.
The teacher, Pennie Davis, was assaulted by a student in her classroom. Davis says that she was the victim of retaliation from JPS after reporting the incident to police back in 2015.
The district transferred Davis to another school as opposed to moving the student out of her classroom.
In 2018, Davis was awarded over $380k in damages by a Jackson County jury. The ruling was appealed by JPS with the Michigan Supreme Court, but the court ruled in Davis’ favor on April 20.
