Busting Cabin Fever

As more and more Americans are preparing to hunker down to avoid the spread of COVID-19 throughout our country, we are being asked to stay home and practice social distancing (staying 6 feet or more away from those who are not immediate family members). Here are some ideas the WKHM crew came up with for busting the cabin fever and boredom at home:

Move those muscles

Here are some ideas for when you’re in-between Netflix episodes and feeling restless:

  • Throw down the couch cushions and pillows and play the classic floor is lava game
  • Turn up the music and have a dance party (We know a radio station that plays some pretty good tunes…)
  • Go up and down the stairs a few times
  • Set up an obstacle course in the backyard
  • Intermittent mini-exercises like jumping jacks, windmills or yoga stretches
  • The Jackson YMCA has some great resources for ideas & activities!

Spring cleaning

Use this opportunity to deep-clean your home and really get into those corners, baseboards, and the dreaded no-man’s-land behind the couch.

Stream TV shows & movies

While you have to have a paid subscription to streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+, hundreds of movies and shows are available to stream on-demand with these services which takes the sting out of being stuck at home for a while. And guess what, parents… Disney+ just released Frozen 2 early. You’re welcome!

Comcast is offering 60 free days of their basic internet package for qualifying low-income households and will halt disconnection of services if a customer cannot pay their bill.

Don’t stop learning

Colleges & universities are providing online classrooms, but what about the little ones? Some educators are providing great resources for kids, such as Scholastic’s Learn at Home website that includes daily projects to keep kids reading, thinking, and growing.

Science experiments

Break out some household ingredients and do some learning at the same time. Here is a great page full of at-home science experiments and activities that utilize household items.

Family board/card games

Time to dust off those boxes in the basement and break out Monopoly – these can be great ways to bond with family and pass the time.

Take a power nap

Studies show that taking a quick 15-minute nap can actually energize you more than a cup of coffee. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a few minutes to charge your batteries.

Give each other space

Let’s be honest, no one gets along 100% of the time, so being in an enclosed or confined space with your immediate family more often than usual can put you on edge. Be sure to allow yourselves and others some quiet time for reflection every day.

As always, you can tune in to 970AM / 101.5FM and WKHM.com for the latest developments, and check out our sister radio stations for a great music selection and community information. (Both are available as free mobile apps, too!)
