In a statement from the city, officials have announced that they are looking for local contractors to help with the abatement of lead-based paint products throughout the community.
Lead abatement work requires specialized techniques, and carries certain risks with it. Because of this, the EPA requires workers to be certified and use specific abatement techniques. The City of Jackson received a $2.9 million grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to allow the city to begin recruiting and training Certified Lead Abatement Supervisors and Workers.
“Lead based paints pose a significant problem to communities with older housing stock. The financial support from HUD enables us to appropriately credential lead abatement contractors so we can continue to mitigate the number of children in our community with elevated blood lead levels,” said Mayor Derek Dobies.
