The City of Jackson says they are stepping up efforts to remove and trim street trees, tackling a backlog of nearly 300 properties in need of service. The Department of Public Works says storm damage, aging trees, and overgrowth near homes and power lines have added to the problem.

To keep up, the city has increased its forestry budget by 45% over the past six years. In 2024, crews removed nearly 300 trees — up 52% from the previous year. And with an extra $200,000 approved for Johnny’s Tree Service, another 100 trees will get attention this spring.

DPW Director Mike Osborn says the work will make neighborhoods safer and more attractive. Stumps are removed, grass is planted, and new trees will be added throughout 2025.

To report a tree problem, call the DPW at 517-788-4170.
