A Grass Lake man who admitted to firing a shotgun around town has been sentenced to probation.
Jackson County Circuit Judge Susan Jordan sentenced 27-year-old Michael Brian Smedley to two years of probation on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to firing a gun at a building and damaging property. A more serious felony charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.
Smedley also received a suspended 180-day jail sentence, meaning he won’t serve time if he follows court orders. He must also pay over $1,200 in restitution.
Police arrested Smedley last October after responding to efforts of gunfire near North Lake Road and East Michigan Avenue. Officers found him hiding behind bushes along with spent shotgun shells. Investigators later recovered a shotgun and more ammunition at his home.
