The Jackson School Board met Tuesday for the first time since Superintendent Jeff Beal announced he will be leaving the district.
Board Vice President Derek Dobies said Beal made the decision to step away at the right time and has always been committed to the district’s success. The board approved Beal’s last day as June 30, allowing him to complete the 2025 school year.
Board Secretary Cheryl Simonetti emphasized the importance of finding a new superintendent with strong ties to Jackson, noting that Beal’s connection to the community helped keep him in the role for over a decade.
The board decided to give current Jackson Public Schools employees priority for the position and will work with the Michigan Association of School Boards in the search. Interviews for internal candidates are expected to begin by April 15.
Beal’s departure comes as the district faces a budget deficit of over $4 million.
