In 2023 Consumers Energy announced their Reliability Roadmap which is a blueprint for a smarter, stronger grid with a goal of limited power outages to no more than 100,000 customers and no longer than 24 hours. Part of that investment is to bolster their workforce, tasked with improving and maintaining that grid.
Consumers VP of Electric Operations Chris Laird told WKHM that they have created an apprenticeship program to do just that.
Apprentices are hired in and go through a 48-month hands-on training process and they work their way through a certification process to become a journeyman worker. In the last 4 years Consumers has hired over 330 apprentices.
Laird says anyone interested in this career may visit the Consumers website linked below or check with Jackson College.
