A man will be sentenced this coming Monday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge in a crash that killed an off-duty Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy.
Jack Henry Pierson, 29, admitted to a moving violation causing death in the May 25 crash that killed 27-year-old Deputy Christopher Davis. He faces up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine after sentencing on March 17.
Investigators say Pierson failed to fully stop at a Waterloo Township intersection before Davis’ motorcycle struck his SUV. Davis’ family believes the charge is too lenient, but prosecutors say a misdemeanor was the only legal option based on state law.
Pierson told police he was unfamiliar with the area and didn’t see Davis before the crash. Data from his vehicle showed he slowed but didn’t stop completely. Alcohol was ruled out as a factor.
Davis, remembered for his dedication to law enforcement, was honored with a roadside memorial at the crash site.
