Springport Middle School was back open Thursday after an evacuation Wednesday due to a gas line backup.
Superintendent Christie Robinson says students and staff left the building around 1:15 p.m. as a precaution after noticing a strange smell near a science room. Fire crews determined the odor came from a sewer gas backup caused by a faulty valve — no hazardous gases were detected, and no injuries were reported.
Students were temporarily moved to the high school gym before being sent home at the usual time. Robinson thanked first responders for their quick action.
