JPS faces $4 million budget gap, layoffs likely

jps-2

Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Jackson Public Schools is facing a $4 million budget gap, and Superintendent Jeff Beal says staff reductions are likely. At a recent board meeting, he estimated up to 35 teaching positions could be cut — though he hopes to lower that number to around 10-15 when the budget is revised in March.

With 85% of the budget tied to staff, potential cuts also include administrators, secretaries, and paraprofessionals. The board approved offering voluntary severance packages of about $15,000 to ease the impact.

Board member Derek Dobies supports the move, saying it offers a better alternative to sudden layoffs. However, Board President Shalanda Hunt expressed concern about losing too many educators, stressing the impact on students.

The district’s financial strain stems in part from the loss of federal COVID-19 funds, which dropped by over $10 million this year. The budget must be finalized by June.
