Parents and Students Rally in Jackson, Urging Rep. Walberg to Oppose Education Cuts

Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A group of parents, students, and education advocates rallied outside Congressman Tim Walberg’s Jackson office Tuesday, urging him to oppose potential cuts to the U.S. Department of Education.

During the demonstration, a small group approached Walberg’s office, where a staffer accepted a letter outlining concerns but did not comment. Protestors, including Jackson School Board Vice President Derek Dobies, say federal funding supports critical resources like teachers, books, and curriculum, and losing it could deeply affect local schools.

Meanwhile, President Trump’s administration argues education needs reform, with his pick for education secretary pushing for more school choice. Walberg’s office later issued a statement saying he values input from constituents and is focused on improving student outcomes while reducing bureaucracy.
