Oakland County, Mich. (WKHM) — A tragic three-vehicle crash on I-96 early New Year’s Day left one woman dead and five others seriously injured.
The collision occurred around 3:10 a.m. Wednesday on westbound I-96 near South Hill Road in Lyon Township. Police say a 57-year-old Fenton woman, a backseat passenger in a Ford Explorer, was killed when the SUV struck a stopped Chevrolet Trax in the roadway. The impact caused the Explorer to spin into oncoming traffic, where it was hit head-on by a Jeep Compass.
The deceased woman’s 82-year-old husband, also in the backseat, is in critical condition. The driver of the Explorer and his wife sustained serious injuries but are stable. The Compass driver, a 75-year-old Leslie woman, is also in critical condition.
The Trax driver, a 30-year-old from Ypsilanti, is in stable condition. Police are investigating why his vehicle was stopped and say alcohol may have been a factor.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.
