Jackson, Mich. (WKHM, Marc W. Daly) — Consumers Energy is sharing tips to help Michiganders save on energy costs as winter sets in and heating bills climb.
Heating can account for about 30% of your energy bill, and water heaters add nearly 15%. To save money, have your heating system inspected and replace furnace filters to improve efficiency.
Seal up drafts – just a small gap around windows or doors can let in cold air, making your furnace work harder. Close off unused spaces like attics, basements, and garages to keep heat from escaping.
Ceiling fans can also help – set them on low to circulate warm air without creating a chill.
When it comes to water, take showers instead of baths to use less hot water and set your water heater to 120 degrees to save on heating costs. If you’re leaving home for more than two days, switch your water heater to “vacation mode” if it has that feature.
Stay warm and save money with these simple steps.
