Jackson, Mich. (WKHM, Marc W. Daly) — A tense 3-hour standoff at a Jackson apartment complex ended peacefully Monday morning, with the suspect taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
It began around 2 a.m. on December 9, when Jackson County Central Dispatch received a call from a man making homicidal statements. Dispatchers identified the call’s location as an apartment at Grand River Ridge Apartments on Van Buren Street. Police say two children were inside the home with the caller.
Officers, joined by mental health clinicians from LifeWays, responded to the scene and worked to deescalate the situation. Jackson Police and Fire Director Elmer Hitt says their focus was on convincing the man to leave the apartment safely.
By 5 a.m., the 36-year-old suspect exited the home along with the children, who were unharmed. He was transported to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital for further evaluation. No injuries were reported.
