Jackson, Mich. (WKHM, Marc W. Daly) — New data shows fewer Michigan high school students are meeting college readiness standards, with math scores showing the sharpest declines. According to the Michigan Department of Education, just over 25% of 11th graders who took the SAT in the 2023-24 school year met overall readiness benchmarks. While more than half met standards in reading and writing, only about 26% did so in math — down significantly from pre-pandemic levels.

In 2018-19, 33.9% of students met overall benchmarks, and 36.6% were math-ready. Officials say the SAT measures students’ ability to succeed in college courses, with benchmarks set at 530 for math and 480 for reading and writing.

Despite the drop in math scores, other readiness rates have stayed relatively stable in recent years.

According to the report Columbia Central High School had the highest average SAT score with 985.6, Vandercook the lowest with 832.2.
