MSU asking Michiganders to be on the lookout for Spongy Moths

Environmental researchers at Michigan State University (MSU) are asking Michiganders to be on the lookout for a troublesome pest. Spongy Moths — formerly known as Gypsy Moths — are an invasive species from Europe that have few predators in the US.

They can decimate trees, cause allergic reactions, and their waste can prevent homeowners from using their outdoor spaces in the summertime. They lay egg masses on places such as play equipment, lawn furniture, and trees. Homeowners who believe they have Spongy Moth egg masses on their property should contact the Macomb County MSU Extension Office.
