Cleanup & restoration efforts begin after storm rips through mid-Michigan

storm-damage

Jackson, Mich., Aug. 25, 2023 (WKHM) — Consumers Energy says they have begun work to restore power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses affected by a “fierce” storm Thursday night that packed up to 75mph winds across mid- and southern Michigan.

One person was killed and several others injured in accidents along I-96 in Livingston County, where the sheriff’s office says more than 25 vehicles were damaged. A suspected tornado came through the area.

In addition, one person was killed after a tree fell on their home on Martin Street in Lansing just after 10 p.m. Thursday night.

The National Weather Service is surveying damage in Grand Rapids and Webberville today to confirm two suspected tornadoes.

Several trees are down in the Jackson area, blocking roads and causing damage to homes and property. To report a power outage or downed power line, visit the Consumers Energy outage center.

The Jackson Civil War Muster, set to take place August 26 and 27 at Cascades Falls Park, is asking for assistance in cleanup efforts.

Many area schools are closed today due to lack of power or dangerous road conditions.
