Jackson, Mich. — The Jackson City Council held a special meeting Tuesday, December 20 to make decisions on how to combat homelessness and housing insecurity in the City of Jackson.
At the meeting, council decided to allocate $150,000 in American Rescue Plan funds to purchase and construct 10 small pallet homes for homeless individuals to live in. They also decided to pursue a lease agreement with Jackson Public Schools for the City to use the vacant T.A. Wilson Academy building on W. Morrell Street for housing homeless residents.
Lastly, council considered a proposal from the local group Residents in Action which will provide various housing and living assistance for homeless residents, including supporting extended motel stays.
City of Jackson spokesperson Aaron Dimick says that City Council and staff will work together to implement these plans over the coming months.
