On Monday, September 26th, 2022, police where in pursuit of an armed suspect in the area of Hunt Elementary School. The school was placed on a soft lockdown at the recommendation of Jackson Sheriff and Jackson City Police departments.
The suspect was eventually captured, with no harm to anyone at the school. WKHM spoke with Superintendent of Jackson Public Schools Jeff Beal who provided more on the incident “We had a person of interest in the area…that the police were looking for and it spilled onto campus in only that the individual was arrested on campus. No connection to the school, it wasn’t a parent or anyone with a relationship (with someone on school grounds)”.
Beal went on to praise the swift action of the Jackson Police Department and Blackman Public Safety as well as school personnel “They did exactly what they were trained to do…they went into a secure mode, which isn’t a “hard lockdown” where everybody is sheltering in place, it’s very much monitoring the outside and ensuring the doors are locked”.
According to Beal, most of the students at Hunt Elementary had no idea that there was a lockdown of any sort.
