On March 31st at 2:09am a Columbia Township Police Department police officer was involved in an on-duty officer related shooting. The incident took place in the 100 block of Hawthorne Drive on Lake Columbia.
Erik P. Neilson, a 36-year-old Brooklyn man, was pronounced dead at the scene according to an email from Columbia Township Police Chief Jay Niles.
The officer involved, a 6-year veteran of law enforcement, was called to the scene for a medical issue. The officer was not injured.
The Michigan State Police will be conducting the investigation of this incident.
