Jackson County COVID-19 cases on the rise

Jackson, MI — The Jackson County Health Department has identified a sudden rise in COVID-19 cases due to travel outside Michigan.

As of May 1, 2020, Jackson County had 360 recorded cases of COVID-19 and 23 deaths. As of July 1, 2020, the case count was up to 492 with 29 deaths.

So far, 417 in Jackson County have recovered from COVID-19.

The Jackson County Health Department offered the following safety tips and precautions residents can take to help slow the spread of COVID-19:

  • If you must travel to one of the current high-risk states, wear a face mask, wash your hands every 1-2 hours, and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from people not in your household.
  • While traveling on an airplane, bus, van, or train which is a major high risk activity, wear your mask and avoid activities such as eating and drinking.
  • If you have traveled, be particularly careful to look out for even mild symptoms of COVID-19 such as fatigue, muscle aches, low grade fever, or runny nose.

The Jackson County Health Department recommends getting tested if you feel symptoms of COVID-19, warning not to brush possible symptoms off as jet lag or the result of a long drive.

More travel safety tips are available on the CDC’s website.

Questions can be directed to the Jackson County Health Department at (517) 788-4420, Option 9.
