Jackson, MI — The Jackson County Animal Shelter does more than offer pets for adoption. The shelter also participates with the community in many ways, including taking the animals on field trips to senior care residents to brighten their day.
However, due to COVID-19 concerns, they have had to get a little creative. Although they could not go inside, shelter volunteers recently took some dogs to visit with residents through the windows at Faith Haven Senior Care Center.
“JCAS Volunteers and our ambassador dogs regularly visit assisted living homes throughout Jackson County,” says Marc Daly of the Jackson County Animal Shelter. “Both dog and cat visits fulfill needs to nurture, reduce anxiety, provides natural physical therapy, provides stimulation, combats depression, and the list goes on and on. With health restrictions in place, our volunteers and dogs are not able to have direct contact with the residents. These outside walking visits by their windows is the next best thing. Our volunteers love helping us handling our dogs, they enjoy being a part of our community outreach, and they love seeing the huge smiles on all the faces.”
