The City of Jackson is recognizing LGBTQ pride month with a Mayoral Proclamation, video, and flying of the pride flag in Horace Blackman Park.
On Monday, June 8, Mayor Derek Dobies signed a Mayoral Proclamation that designates June 2020 as LGBTQ Pride Month in the City of Jackson. The proclamation states that the City supports the rights of every citizen to experience equality and freedom from discrimination. It also encourages residents to reflect on the ongoing struggle for equality members of the LGBTQ community face and celebrate their contributions to the city.
To further publicly show support for LGBTQ Pride Month, the City of Jackson is flying the LGBTQ pride flag on the flag pole in Horace Blackman Park. Last year, the City flew the pride flag atop Jackson City Hall for the first time in its history. The flag is flying in Horace Blackman Park this year because the City Hall flag pole is undergoing maintenance.
Jackson’s annual Pride Festival, which usually takes place every August, has been canceled this year due to COVID-19 concerns. A digital pride festival is taking place in August so the community can safely celebrate at home.
