Gov. Whitmer gives update on State’s response to COVID-19

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer addressed the public Wednesday, April 15 at 4 p.m. to give an update on the state’s response to COVID-19.

Whitmer stated that a couple of weeks ago southern Michigan hospitals had less than a day’s worth of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). At this point, those hospitals now have a few days’ worth, but the goal is to continue acquiring PPE so hospitals have a few weeks’ worth on hand.

3.5 million pieces of PPE have now been donated by individuals and businesses.

Testing capacity has also been increased, and California and New York are donating a combined 150 ventilators to the State of Michigan.

Those whose unemployment applications are pending may be eligible to qualify for alternate assistance in the meantime through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Additionally, if you were previously denied for unemployment, you might qualify now with recent changes. Apply for assistance at Michigan.gov/MIBridges.

Governor Whitmer cites a data-driven approach to begin re-engaging the state, and hopes to avoid a second wave of COVID-19 in Michigan.

Demonstrators gathered around the State Capitol today to protest Governor Whitmer’s expanded Stay Home, Stay Safe order which places limits on purchasing certain items from stores. “I support your right to free speech, and I respect your opinions. I just urge you, don’t put yourself at risk, and don’t put others at risk either,” said Whitmer. “I ask that you do everything you can to protect yourselves, so you’re protecting the first responders. We’re all in this together.”

Dr. Joneigh S. Khaldun, Chief Medical Executive and Chief Deputy Director for Health, states that we are beginning to see a plateau in the growth of COVID-19 cases and deaths in Michigan, however, it may still be a bit premature to make a decision on easing up on social distancing measures.
