Michigan State Representative Julie Alexander joined WKHM to talk about the recreational marijuana initiative on the ballot in November.
From a personal narrative, she’s not a fan. “Personally I do not think its in our state’s best interest to have recreational marijuana. When we look at the ballot initiative, we know two things. This would make Michigan the highest limit on possessing marijuana, and we know it has the lowest taxation rate in the nation. Those two pieces right there cause me alarm.” Representative Alexander said that the revenue generated from the taxation would be divided between a study to look at pros and cons of marijuana use in veterans, local municipalities, the school aid fund, and transportation.
The ballot initiative creates a problem because Representative Alexander feels like the language when it comes to money is not clear. She also has concerns over banking regulation. “Marijuana is federally illegal, it puts a different set of standards on us at the state as well, and looking at how the dollars are handled through financial institutions is also a challenge.” Alexander said.
The recreational marijuana ballot initiative is on the November 6th ballot. Stay tuned to WKHM for all your election coverage.
