Downtown Jackson will come alive once again with the sights and sounds of Gus Macker this weekend.
The action starts Friday night with team check-in and open shootaround. Kyle Liechty, Local Commissioner of the tournament said that the downtown area will have over 500 players; not to mention friends, family, and fans. “We’re at 132 (teams), ages 7 to around 50.” Liechty said. Everything kicks off with newly inducted Gus Macker Hall of Famer Basil Hampton welcoming the return of the tournament to Jackson as well as,”open shooting, teams checking in.” Liechty said.
Games are scheduled to take place between 8am and 6pm Saturday and Sunday, but the economic impact is expected to be a bit larger than just the revenue generated from the Macker tournament. “All the area restaurants will be open, Tiki Sam’s Pizza will have brick oven pizzas going, the downtown businesses are pretty excited.” Liechty said.
The Macker tournament will have no shortage of recognizable faces as well. Liechty told WKHM, “(You’ll see) athletes that used to play high school sports in the area. Whether it’s graduates from this past year, ten years ago, a lot of familiar names and faces come out to play.”
