Wolverines Cruise Past Chippewas in Non-Conference Finale

Sophomore guard Trey Burke's (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) second double-double of the season helped the University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 2 AP/No. 2 ESPN/USA Today) close out its non-conference schedule with a 88-73 win against Central Michigan on Saturday night (Dec. 29) inside Crisler Center. It marks the first time a U-M team has remained undefeated through non-conference play since the 1985-86 season.

Burke recorded a game-high 22 points on 9-for-12 shooting and matched his career-high with 11 assists. He scored 17 of his points in the first half, while freshman guard Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) tallied just two points in the first 20 minutes and erupted for 17 points in the second half to finish with 19 overall. Stauskas drained all five of his career-high tying five threes in the second half.

Freshman forward Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) finished one point shy of his career high with 20 points, hitting a career-best nine field goals (9-for-13). In his first career start, freshman guard Caris LeVert (Pickerington, Ohio/Central) notched a career-high nine points and five assists in 32 minutes.

The opening four minutes of the game featured frequent scoring from both sides. Despite an early 9-2 Michigan lead, led by back-to-back dunks by Robinson, Central Michigan remained close, pulling within two points, 12-10, at the 16:27 mark. Michigan then used a 6-0 run to increase its advantage and force the Chippewas to call a timeout with 15:34 remaining in the first half.

The two teams exchanged baskets before a 12-3 run over a six-minute span, capped by consecutive buckets by LeVert, produced a 17-point lead for the Maize and Blue by the 7:01 mark. The Wolverines pushed their lead to as many as 19 points on two occasions and after trading field goals, held a 17-point advantage, 46-29, at halftime.

Burke led the way in the first half with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting, while Robinson added 10 and LeVert scored a career-high nine points in the opening 20 minutes.

Michigan converted 20-of-35 (57 percent) of its attempts from the floor, while holding Central Michigan to just 11-of-32 (34 percent) shooting in the opening stanza.

The Wolverines came out firing after the break, constructing a 12-2 run, compliments of three triples from Stauskas, to take their largest lead of the night, 58-33, at the 16:07 mark.

Michigan maintained at least an 18-point advantage until the under four-minute media timeout. In the final three minutes, Central Michigan outscored U-M 7-4, coming only as close as 15 points by the final buzzer.

The Wolverines scored 20 points off CMU's 15 turnovers, while committing just three turnovers of their own.
