Napoleon Township Man Dies Following Crash on Hoyer Road

An area man lost his life following a crash in Napoleon Township Tuesday afternoon.  Shortly before 5:00 PM Napoleon Township officers responded to Hoyer Road about a ¼ mile south of South Street.  Sergeant Duaine Pittman of the Napoleon Township Police Department and Deputies Tony McNeil and Crystal McCormick from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department were the first to arrive on scene.  The vehicle was on fire and they were able to free 37 year old Shawn M. Berkeypile from the vehicle and pull him to safety.  Berkeypile was heading south on Hoyer Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control went off the right side of the road, struck a tree and the vehicle came to rest on its side.  It is also believed that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.  Jackson 911 received two calls prior to the crash of a vehicle, matching that of Berkeypile’s, traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of Flansburg and Falahee.  Other witnesses saw the vehicle speeding near the intersection of Hoyer and Flansburg.  Berkeypile was flown to U of M where he passed away overnight.
