An inmate worker walked away from the Columbia Township Police Department Tuesday morning. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, 20 year old Domonick William Mata was turned over to the Columbia Township Police Department to work at the township office. An employee left their keys on a desk, and shortly after 9:00 Mata took the keys and stole their SUV. Later in the morning Mata was located at his girlfriend’s house in Leoni Township. The vehicle was returned to it’s owner and Mata was returned to jail. Mata was serving a sentence for repeated drivers license infractions, a larceny charge and probation violation. Mata was due to be released Christmas Eve at 12:01 AM. Deputies will be requesting charges from the Prosecuting Attorney for escape and vehicle theft.
