Jackson College President Dan Phelan announced on WKHM that the former Automotive Technology Programs had been “discontinued…due to lack of interest”. The equipment used in the courses was auctioned off and the now vacant building will be redesigned to feature practical and functional applications for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as allocating space for the arts.
“We are trying to draw some connections between the hard sciences and art” Phelan stated on a recent appearance on AM Jackson with Greg O’Connor. Examples include practical drawing and even pottery.
Much of the STEM related courses will focus on the changing face of manufacturing, such as virtual welding.
